Thanks Bob I might end up taking you up on a very generous offer- but i will persevere a little longer for now.

I then disconnected the power and removed the Nano and inspected it. Could not see any issues. I then reconnected it and disconnected it about 5 times and it did not make any difference.  When I pressed the reset button on the nano the "l" LED next to the power LED on the nano flashed briefly.
I then reflashed the nano and it did not seem to make any difference.  
I then replaced it with a new nano and that did not seem to make a difference.
I then checked the voltages on the TX board. The 3.3, 5 and 9V connection points all had the correct voltage. The Battery voltage was 14.4 volts, it was a bright sunny day.
I placed the multimeter on the TX LED and the voltage was pulsing even though i could not see the LED flashing. Not sure if the LED is working ? or if its just nor visible in bright daylight
None of this seemed to help as the receiver is still not getting any data.
Open to suggestions on where to go next ?

I would definitely try the debug mode. This means enabling the debug outputs of the TX unit to the USB port, upload new firmware and watching the output in Arduino IDE monitor...

(It is also possible that after a few years of "being outside" the entire PCB will need to be resoldered. It depends on how well prepared it was for the outdoor environment.)

Thanks for the advice here is the output. Sorry but I dont understand "bring the output inside the code tags".  I did notice there is some minor "schmutz" on the RF TX board. I cleaned this up but it does not seem to have made a difference. The TX LED on the nano now flashes regularly, but not the tx led on the tx board. I assume the device should still "work" with the IDE monitor configured "on" ?

You don't need to write "true" for debug definitions... You only need remove "//" at the beginning of the lines. But I think the output will be the same.
In my opinion, you have almost the whole board in order, it receives, processes and sends data correctly. It is possible that the transmitter module
is not working, I would recommend replacing it.

I didn't notice which TX unit you are using, what version it is. Tell us, please. And can you post a photo of the transmitter module?
(The transmitter module should probably always have the transmitter antenna connected, it should not be running "idle".)

It means you have:
KXD-10036 RF Transmitter Module 433MHZ

Just wondering how to find the correct TX module.


The parts list i found says it should be a  KXD-10036 RF Transmitter Module 433MHZ which is what i currently have and seems impossible to find. 

I found a thread by Werk which references a different type of part ? link shown below :-
