FS1000A RF Transmitter Module

werk you recommend using the FS1000a RF transmitter module and the ASK OOK RF Wireless Receiver Module.

Since the FS1000A RF transmitter on ebay always seems to be sold as a pair (i.e with a receiver module as well) why do you not use that receiver rather than the one you recommend?

I assume there is a reason?

Thanks for asking. This is a relevant question.

The main reason is the stability and sensivity of the receiver module.
Attempting to use the receiver that comes with FS1000 transmitter module, has been the cause of problems for some people. It may work in some situations, but you always lost lots of data packets.
I strongly do not recommend using that receiver.

I'll just wade into this conversation by saying that the radio components that Werk recommends are going great here. I don't know how to measure packet loss of this system, but I'd guess I'm not getting any as my data looks pretty clean in my old eyes Smile

Werk_AG, it looks like another one of your babies might be migrating overseas Smile
I'd expect your children will be all over the place in the not too distant future.

Indeed no one should use that receiver at least for this purpose.
That was my first receiver (and first error) in early tests and soon realize that I made a terrible choice.
The receiver does work but with a couple of flaws and most of the time it didn't receive the data. Personally I think that you can't even compare both products, the sensitivity is much worse and the noise/gain relation isn't that good. The receiver is good enough for remote control in smaller projects but isn't good enough for getting the station packets at the demanded rate.
I was monitoring all the time during the tests and even a slight change in antenna direction afected the reception (the transmitter was very close so it wasn't a distance problem) and became a reason for not receiving the packets.
So, my advise is if you get both the receiver and transmitter for a low price (last time i bought 2 pairs of tx and rx for less than 2 USD), get it and take the receiver away for other purposes.
The suggested receiver is more expensive but worth the difference Big Grin

If I type "ASK OOK RF Wireless Receiver Module" into ebay.co uk all of these come up (and many others) and yet some pcboards in the images have FS1000 on the PCB, any advice please, which is which?

Amplitude Shift Keying (ASK), On-Off Keying (OOK) and Amplitude Modulation (AM) mean almost the same thing and are basically just describing the method of transmitting data (it's a kind of fast Morse code). They say almost nothing about how well the data will be received. It's rather like saying only that you want "a car which runs on petrol", but there are many types of car and some may not give you a satisfactory journey (or perhaps arrive at all).

A good type of radio receiver to look for is called a "SuperHet." (superheterodyne) which your third link mentions. The simple, low-cost type to avoid is called a "SuperRegen." (superregenerative) like your first link (but I don't think the listing actually mentions it). SuperRegens generally have much lower range, but their main problem is that they output "garbage" (noise) when there is no signal being transmitted. That means the microntroller has to spend much of its time checking if there is a "real" signal or just garbage (when there may be proper "work" to be done).

To continue the analogy: SuperRegen might be considered like a 2-stroke engine and SuperHet a 4-stroke. A 2-stroke might be alright for a moped or your lawnmower (although even many of those are 4-stroke now), but if you insist on buying a 2-stroke car, don't be surprised if you end up with a Trabant. Wink
