RX Board - what does VP1 (and PB1) do?
#1

I'm putting troubleshooting of my weather display board on hold while I wait for some things to arrive. Working with the RX board instead. It's fully assembled, using a CH340G chipset Nano. It's powered from a 12V wall wart power supply. It powers on, and after a few minutes shows the weather data (which is only indoor temp/humidity and barometer right now, as the TX board isn't operating yet).

When I plug in my computer (a Mac running WeatherCat at the moment; will in due course be a Raspberry Pi running WeeWX) and tell the software to connect to the station, if VP1 is open (i.e., turned off), the Nano constantly reboots. If VP1 is closed (turned on), the software connects successfully.

Looking at the schematic, I see that VP1 ties the RESET pin on the Nano high through R3/C3, which in my installation is a 0.1 uF ceramic disk cap. Is this all it does, then? Prevent the Nano from rebooting when a computer's trying to connect? Or does it have another function as well?

For PB1, I've found two things it does. First, if I press and release it quickly, it turns the backlight on and off. Second, if I hold it down for about 5 seconds, it re-initializes the RX board (which I assume clears out the datalogger as well). Does it do anything else?

This is exactly the function of the VP1 switch, prevent the Nano auto-reset when a computer attempts to connect through the USB port. It should be kept open only when you are programing the Nano, for normal operation it should be in close position.
Installing a switch in the front panel of the case, will make its use easier.

Assuming you are using a 20x4 LCD, a double click will also show some info about your TX unit 0.

Pressing the PB1 button for about 5 seconds, does a "factory reset", i.e puts the system as first time use state, but does not erase the data logger chip. If for some reason you need to make a "factory reset" you will not loose the recorded data. Most of the times this behaviour is preferable to also erase the logger chip.

Great, thanks. Moving right along with this...

How do you go about clearing the logger chip data?

No changes on that. The logger chip is never erased.
