Hi tyntop
This is a good question. The answer certainly will clarify many others about this matter.
The only chip that can be used either in the RX v4.02 either in the RX v4.03 boards, is the 1mbit AT45DB011D-SSH-B. Any other chip will not work.
The main reason for using that specific 1mbit chip and not any other with a larger capacity, even of the same family, is for compatibility. The logger will behave like a Davis data logger, and a larger capacity chip is not supported.
Certainly you have an very outdated RX v.4.02 parts list, in which there is a reference for other IC, but is also stated "Not required, not used". At that time, I also thought that doing some cheat to fool the Davis protocol, a 4mbit chip could be used, but I was wrong.
