thanks for your explanation, but I think this was a misunderstanding. I know why the voltage regulator is used, but I was asking myself why this linear regulator is used for a potentially battery powered application since it is not very efficient.
So I was wondering if you chose it because of the small voltage ripple of a linear regulator.
In using a switching regulator i could suggest this ones:

They a pin compatible to the already used 7809 and could be a good alternative.
