I wrote a long article on the subject, but it's written in Portuguese language. Maybe you can use google to translate it, and try to understand how it works. Anyway the article is here.
Maybe someone can translate it to English.
Perhaps in the future, support for a soil sensor can be added, but not so near. I will keep your suggestion.
I am another person who would like to see support added for Soil Moisture sensing, like e.g. the Davis Vantage Pro2 / Plus has when you add the 160 GBP extra sensor module LOL. Hopefully you will consider this soon. I already ordered a TX and also a RX board from you and I will try and start building my system soon.
Eventually I would like to see support added for visibility sensing (Infra Red sensor picking up how much beam is reflected back from IR emitting diode beam), a Fog / mist sensor, snow depth sensor, soil temperature sensor, and maybe even cloud height sensor! Don't know how these can be implemented but if you are determined, some might be possible? Well I can dream can't I 8-)

Fine Offset WH-1081 (Maplin N96FY) at present, soon to be WDPro2 I hope so that I can have Solar & UV graphs as well
