i am confused as to how the sma connector is mounted to the board ?
i am used to seeing the 4 support legs and centre through the board

Hi,
Please use the model like picture bellow. They will insert on the edge of the PCB (as those used on the 4Pro DB receiver).

ok - i think i have it now
2 outside legs and centre slide onto board surface solder points ( other 2 legs not required )

There are solder points on the PCB for the four legs, however if you have them, you can use the "regular" SMA connectors (those with the one leg on each corner) the way you said.
